Shop Small is a monthly series highlighting small business owners from diverse backgrounds. This series aims to go deeper than your typical product roundup, diving into the inspirational stories behind some of our favorite brands. By taking a behind-the-scenes look at how their shops came to be and highlighting the products they (and their shoppers!) love, we hope to put a deserving spotlight on these marginalized business owners.
Everyone deserves a bathroom design that sparks joy, and Sproos! wants to prove it's attainable. A well-designed bathroom can improve your daily routine, especially in the shower, where a positive experience often doubles as self-care. For renters, we tend to feel stuck with the aesthetic of an underwhelming bathroom — think neutral colors and basic chrome fixtures. However, this does not have to be the case anymore.
Imagine a bright pink, cheerful yellow or vibrant green showerhead that can be installed in only five minutes. Sproos! is a home improvement brand created with apartment dwellers in mind, and its colorful shower accessories have been popping up on social media.
Co-founders Benjamin Fix and Greg Reinecker started the brand in 2020, bringing together their personal experiences (both renters in New York City) and professional skills (Ben has 15 years of plumbing experience, while Greg is a product designer). "Everyone should have access to cool, fun and healthy plumbing — and it doesn't have to kill the bank," says Fix.
From the brand's origin and best-selling products to its big-picture goals, we spoke to Fix to learn more about the growing home brand.
"We want to become the bathroom brand for the next generation." — Benjamin Fix
How did Sproos! come to be?
My family and I were renting this beautiful brownstone in Queens, and we wanted to make that apartment feel like home. We made some minor renovations, like painting and changing the plumbing — of course, because I'd spent 15 years in the plumbing industry. It made me realize there wasn't a bath brand that took care of renters' needs.
Renters are living longer in their apartments and want to make them feel like home. Even with a plumbing background, I struggled sometimes to install products because I didn't have the right tools without running to The Home Depot five times. There was clearly an opportunity to offer something better, so I partnered with Greg and we got it going. We provide all of the tools, the instructions are understandable and our customer service is available on the weekends to help answer questions.
Why did you decide on the name, "Sproos!"?
We brainstormed the name as a family at the kitchen table! "Sproos" was inspired by the idea of sprucing up a space — a fun and empowering way to put your mark on your rental. We wanted to differentiate ourselves from masculine plumbing brands and speak to our consumers as friends, rather than an authority telling them how things must be done.
What are your best-selling products?
The hand shower adds so much versatility — perfect for washing yourself, your kids, your pets and the tub. With three spray functions and powerful pressure, people really feel the difference. A popular feature is also the pause button, great for dog and plant parents. Pink, green and black are the most popular colors. Interestingly, the pink and green were customer-driven — we received so many requests that we just had to make them happen.
It all started with the hand shower, but we've created this little ecosystem. You can add the filter, which is another a top-seller. We have the slide bar that allows you to move the hand shower up and down — if you don't want to wash your hair, want a body massage or crave the spa experience. It can support up to 100 pounds, but can be removed without leaving any marks.
A lot renters also complain about a lack of storage, so we have accessories (a cup holder, phone stand and shelf, to name a few).
What inspired your use of color?
So many plumbing fixtures are just a sea of chrome — it feels so sanitational. It's not inviting, comforting or design-forward. We felt like color is truly our friend and by offering colors, we could speak to the emotions of our customers. People tell us all of the time that our bright yellow showerhead makes them feel happy in the morning.
What's your message to renters or hesitant DIYers?
With everything in life, you need to get started. Even small changes can have a huge impact — and build confidence to tackle more. I see many people, even homeowners, renovating the entire bathroom and it's so expensive. Replacing your showerhead can be the start of making your space truly feel like home. Plumbing doesn't have to be intimidating.

People seem more concerned about wellness in recent years. What are the benefits of shower filtration?
While municipal systems do a great job removing bacteria, they often use heavy chemical treatments that can be harsh on skin and hair. Older pipes can also introduce heavy metals. Our filters help reduce these effects — and our customers see a noticeable improvement to their skin and hair.
